Phase Four ← Phase 2 Phase 3 →
Two more floors on the same house · merch that pays for itself, and paid growth for the newsletter

Something to sell.
Someone to sell it to.

Phase 2 built the platform and turned on the content engine. Phase 3 fills it with creators. Phase 4 is the two pieces you asked about on our call: a Collegist shop with merch and products we design and keep fresh, and Meta ads run for your newsletter, so the list grows on purpose instead of by accident. Pick one, pick both, or park it. Nothing here bills until you say go.

An engraved coast-to-coast journey between campuses
Add-on one · The Collegist Shop

Merch that moms actually wear, and products that pay for the newsletter.

You mentioned merch on the call and the backend already speaks Shopify. The shop lives on your domain, looks like the rest of The Collegist, and we design and run it so you never touch a product page. Founding Campus Editor tees, the Tuesday Test workbook in print, the mom checklist as a real notebook, campus postcards from the collage series. Drops are content, and content is what we already make for you every month.

Build-out · one time

The shop, built and stocked

$999 one time $2,497 standard Launch-partner rate
  • A storefront on thecollegist.com, Shopify checkout underneath, designed to your brand kit
  • The launch collection: up to 12 products designed with you (apparel, print, paper goods, postcards)
  • Print-on-demand fulfillment set up so nothing sits in your garage: they order, it ships
  • Product pages, photography direction and mockups for every item
  • Branded order, shipping and thank-you emails in the house voice
  • Connected to your backend: every buyer becomes a tagged contact, so a mom who buys the notebook hears about Premium
  • Shop announcement across the newsletter and the social calendar at launch

Pass-through at cost, yours: the Shopify plan (about $39/month) and the product cost per order. We pick suppliers with you so the margin makes sense before anything goes live.

Design & upkeep · monthly

New drops, kept fresh

$297 /month · month-to-month $497/mo standard
  • Two to three new product designs a month: seasonal drops, a new campus postcard, a Founding Editor piece
  • Storefront upkeep: pricing, inventory rules, collections, discount codes, holiday sets
  • Promo graphics for every drop, sized for feed, story and the newsletter
  • A merch mention in the letter when a drop lands, written in your voice
  • Order and customer support plumbing watched for you: refunds, reprints, address fixes
  • Shop numbers in your monthly check-in: what sold, what to make next

Rides alongside the Content Engine, which already makes the graphics and runs the calendar. That is why it is $297 and not $497.

Add-on two · Meta Ads, the Subscriber Engine

Paid growth for the newsletter, run like a system, not a gamble.

Right now the list grows when a post lands. Ads make it grow every day, to the exact person you want: the mom of a junior in Texas, the senior touring three schools this fall. We run the campaigns inside your own Meta account, feed them the creative the content engine already makes, and report in plain English every two weeks. Below is the whole thing, including how the money actually works, because you should never have to guess.

Management · monthly

Campaigns run for you

$797 /month · 90-day runway, then month-to-month
$1,200/mo + 15% of spend standard Setup waived · $500 standard
  • Setup once: pixel and Conversions API on thecollegist.com, Instant Forms that drop subscribers straight into your backend with the right tags
  • Two audiences to start: moms of high schoolers, and a broad women 35 to 54 set that lets Meta find them
  • Four to six new ads a month from the content engine: real photos, real quotes, plain text on your colors (the format that wins for newsletters)
  • Weekly optimization: budgets, creative, audiences, and the learning-phase rules below
  • A report every two weeks: cost per subscriber, how the ad cohort opens compared to organic, what we are changing
  • Scale rules agreed in advance, so budget only rises when the numbers earn it
  • Your accounts, your data: the ad account, pixel and audiences are yours forever

Ad spend is separate and paid by you directly to Meta on your own card, so you always see exactly what the platform charged. The fee never scales with spend.

Recommended budget · yours to set

Start small, prove it, then scale

$20–$30 a day to Meta · about $600–$900 a month
  • Why that number: Meta needs about 50 results per ad set per week to learn. At $2 to $4 a subscriber, $20 to $30 a day gets there. Less than that and the campaign never leaves the learning phase.
  • Month one is a test. Two audiences, four to six ads, one goal: a subscriber for $4 or less, with the stretch goal of $2.50.
  • Month two consolidates. Losers off, winners into one budget, a lookalike audience built from your own subscribers once the list passes 1,000.
  • Month three earns the raise. If cost per subscriber holds under $4 for two weeks and the ad cohort opens like organic, we step the budget up 20 to 30 percent every few days.
  • A budget change over 20 percent, a new audience, or a paused week restarts learning. That is why we move in steps, not leaps.

You can raise, lower or pause the daily budget any time. We tell you what it will do to the learning phase before you do it.

Target
$2–$4
per new subscriber. Under $1.50 usually means junk signups, so we watch quality too.
Learning phase
50 / week
results an ad set needs in seven days to exit learning. Budget math follows from this number.
Quality check
35%+
30-day open rate on the ad cohort. If paid subscribers do not open like organic ones, we change the ad, not the goal.
Scale trigger
14 days
of hitting target before budget steps up 20 to 30 percent at a time.

The math, honestly.

Month one media budget ($25 a day)~$750
New subscribers at the target ($3 each)~250
Newsletters convert free readers to paid at a median of about 0.6%, top quartile 2 to 5% (industry data, 2026)2 to 12 paid
Where the money really comes from: the list itself. Sponsorships, university placements, the shop, Premium, and the halo that makes your organic posts and podcasts work harder.compounding

Ads are the fastest lever for list growth and the slowest lever for direct profit. We say that up front so the first 90 days are judged on cost per subscriber and list quality, and the paid side is judged on the welcome sequence and Premium. Once the shop is open, the same machine runs product campaigns with a plain return-on-ad-spend target, where 2 to 3 times spend is the bar we hold ourselves to.

What we will not do

We will not run ads to a dead page, buy followers, or let a campaign burn through the learning phase because a budget got yanked around. We will not report vanity numbers. Every report says what it cost to earn one real reader, and whether she stayed.

If you say yes to both

Ninety days, laid out.

On your goKickoff
One call. Your first product list and suppliers, your monthly ad budget, and the two audiences. Pixel and forms go on the site the same day.
Weeks 1–2Build & test
Shop build begins (storefront, launch collection, checkout, emails). Ads go live at the test budget with four to six creatives. First report at day 14.
Weeks 3–4First drop
The shop opens with its launch collection, announced in the letter and across the calendar. Ads: losers off, winners consolidated.
Days 45–90Prove & scale
Lookalike audience from your own subscribers. Second drop. Budget steps up only when cost per subscriber earns it. Day 90: the honest review, and the decision to continue, change or stop.

Why these numbers
"You already pay for the engine that makes the graphics and runs the calendar. The shop and the ads plug into it, so I am not charging you twice for the same hands. And I would rather grow your list carefully on a small budget than impress you for a month and lose the account." Gavin Lee · Vessels
